History

The history of Funko Pop! figurines began in the United States in 1978 with the creation of the Funko brand by Mike Becker. When he founded his company in Seattle, he intended to specialize in collectible toys. He then invented the famous Bobble Head dolls which met with brief success before becoming obsolete.

The little dogs we sometimes see in cars that move their heads? Exactly those. These first figurines are found in the various restaurants of the Big Boy chain and quickly become the reference of the Funko brand.

The arrival of Freddy Funko in 2002 is sold in the form of Wacky Wobbler which is another type of figurine that the brand sells. Specializing in pop culture vinyl figures, the collection grows from year to year and in 2003 offers its fans a forum dedicated to different collections and for collectors to share tips and advice.

We must therefore wait until 2005 with the purchase of the Funko brand by Brian Mariotti so that the idea of putting Funko Pop! figurines on the market takes shape. This passionate and fan of the first hour will breathe new life into it and in 2009 the first figures in the “Force” range are born. It was in 2010 that the first Pop! figurines were born. Initially, the Funko force 2.0 are presented at the San Diego Comic-con with a Batman blue, black metal effect in a plastic box.

This Batman pop figurine is currently one of the top 10 Funko POP! figurines that is most rated.

2011: The first Funko Pop! are born.

Following the presentation of these figurines in convention, the range is officially marketed in 2011 following the Toy Fair in New York. These vinyl figures are becoming more and more successful and many licenses are emerging.

Inspired by popular culture, these small plastic figurines are copies of emblematic characters from video games, cartoons, series and films. Commercial success is not long in coming, with this new concept which is based on characters adored by the general public. The principle of the collection with the added bonus of very affordable prices has also helped to attract more consumers.

With such success, several stores specializing in the sale of Funko Pop! figurines opened in the United States and in many other countries later.

It must be said that the Internet is also a tool that has greatly contributed to the democratization of Funko Pop figurines in recent years all over the world. If currently the various models available on the market can be acquired in the majority of cases for an average price around 25 Chf, it is not uncommon to see versions produced in limited edition. In such a case, the prices can be logically higher than those which are usually applied.
